BOSTON — It got close in the final moments of the third period, but in the end, Duxbury emerged with a 5-2 victory, winning the 2023 MIAA Division 2 girls hockey championship.
It's Duxbury's first championship win since 2014 when the Dragons won four from 2011-14. The 2014 title came in Division 1.
The scoring started halfway through the first period when Duxbury forward Madeleine Greenwood ripped a slapshot from the point past Canton goalie Carolyn Durand.
Duxbury continued its dominant first period when Duxbury defender McKenna Colella flew down the right side of the zone and slid a backhand through Durand to make it 2-0.
In the second period, Canton regained some momentum and answered when defender Tori Carr's shot from the point went through a sea of players and past Duxbury goalie Anna McGinty to make it 2-1.
However, Duxbury added to its lead with just over a minute left in the second period when Colella's shot from the point was tipped by Greenwood in front of the net to make it 3-1.

With 5:19 to play in the game, Canton forward Audrey Koen one-timed a pass from defender Maya Battista to cut Duxbury's lead to 3-2.
But when it got close, Duxbury found another gear.
Duxbury forward Addyson Harrington one-timed a pass from defender Megan Carney to extend the Dragons lead to 4-2 with just over two minutes to play in the game.
Then, it was forward Parker Metzler who cleaned up a rebound with 1:24 to play to make it 5-2.
McGinty finished the game with 10 saves on 12 shots, while Durand stopped eight of the 13 pucks sent her way.
