The Beast Series and some select teams from outside of the fall midget league will be in the New Haven, Conn., area this weekend for the Yale Jamboree.
Run by Jon Bellonio and Steve Novodor of Yale Midget Hockey, the Yale Jamboree will take place Friday to Sunday at the following rinks: Northford Ice Pavilion in Northford, Conn.; Yale University’s Ingalls Rink in New Haven, Conn.; Wesleyan’s Snyder Rink in Middletown, Conn.; and Westminster School’s Jackson Rink in Simsbury, Conn.
For those unfamiliar with these Connecticut rinks, Ingalls Rink on Yale’s campus is a beautiful, old-school barn affectionately referred to as "The Whale" by many around college hockey. Westy’s Jackson Rink is a great, iconic prep rink. Northford Ice Pavilion is the old home of Sacred Heart University before the program moved its home games to the Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport, Conn.
In addition to the usual teams from the Beast Series, Mid Fairfield 18U/16U/15U, Cape Cod Whalers 18U/16U/15U, Boston Jr. Eagles 18U/16U and Selects Academy 18U/16U will join the group this weekend.
Of course, that means NHL Draft prospects, Dexter center John Farinacci (Harvard), St. Sebastian’s defenseman Jayden Struble (Northeastern), and Berkshire defenseman Cade Alami (Providence) will showcase their talents before scouts.
In addition, Selects Academy forward Ethan Phillips will be watched closely. The Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, native was great last weekend at the Junior Bruins Shootout and is now on the market again after de-committing from Quinnipiac. Boston University is believed to be the frontrunner, but Ohio State, UMass and Harvard are reportedly in contention.
Kudos to jamboree organizers for bringing together teams from the EHF, despite significant pushback from that league’s hierarchy to such practice typically.
While many of the region’s NHL scouts and college coaches will be in Pittsburgh, Pa., for the USHL Fall Classic or in Alberta for the AJHL Showcase, jamboree organizers still expect a good turnout.
