University of Massachusetts hockey head coach Greg Carvel has received a contract extension through the 2022-23 season, the school announced on Tuesday.
“Greg and his staff have worked tirelessly to build our hockey program into a national contender. I am extremely proud of our progress since Greg arrived in 2016 and look forward to many years of competitive success for the Minutemen under his guidance,” UMass Director of Athletics Ryan Bamford said in the school’s press release.
The 1993 St. Lawrence alum just completed his second season as head coach of the Minutemen. After a five-win season in his first year, UMass improved to 17-20-2 this past season.
Prior to arriving in Amherst, Carvel spent four seasons as the head coach at his alma mater. His career coaching record now stands at 94-112-19. In addition to his college coaching background, Carvel has served as a scout and assistant coach for the Ottawa Senators and Anaheim Ducks.
Carvel’s two assistants, Ben Barr and Jared DeMichiel, were both rewarded with two-year extensions as well. Both Barr and DeMichiel are both credited with doing a terrific job on the recruiting trail. Heading into the 2018-19 season, expectations are high with the return of star defensemen Cale Makar and Mario Ferraro.
