The University of Massachusetts has rewarded head coach Greg Carvel and his assistants with contract extensions following the most successful season in school history.
Carvel, the 2019 Spence Penrose Award recipient as the top coach in college hockey, saw his contract extended through the 2023-24 season. Associate head coaches Ben Barr and Jared DeMichiel had their contracts extended through the 2020-21 season.
"One of the strategic goals we have for our athletics department is to hire and retain great coaches and staff. We believe that Greg, Ben and Jared are the best staff in college hockey and we have a strong desire to keep them at UMass for the foreseeable future,” UMass Director of Athletics Ryan Bamford said in a statement.
Last season, UMass set school records for wins with 31 and for winning the Hockey East regular season championship for the first time in school history. It was also the hockey program’s first appearance in the Frozen Four as the Minutemen advanced to the national championship game.
While UMass lost Hobey Baker Award winner Cale Makar and another star defenseman in Mario Ferraro, both of whom are now in the NHL, this year’s team still has pieces in place to finish in the top four of Hockey East.
Bayard Hall commits to Yale
Just a few weeks after de-committing from Brown, Salisbury senior defenseman Bayard Hall has committed to play college hockey for Keith Allain at Yale.
Hall, an ’02 from Oldwick, N.J., is a good-sized, steady, two-way defenseman who has seen his stock rise over the past year or two. In addition to playing for Salisbury, Hall plays for the Yale Jr. Bulldogs 18-U. He was one of the top players in last weekend’s Mid Fairfield Showcase.
Merrimack lands a Euro
Merrimack College head coach Scott Borek and his staff received word earlier this week that Sioux Falls Stampede center Filip Karlsson Tägtström had verbally committed to the Warriors for the 2020-21 season.
The Hanviken, Sweden, native is in his first season playing hockey in North American. The ’99 has been held off the score sheet in his first two USHL games. He had 37 points in 29 SuperElit games with Södertälje SK J20 last season.
