The left-shot '02 from Hingham, Mass., committed to the Buckeyes last December. A first-year eligible prospect for the 2020 NHL Draft, Lovell is rated as a 'C' prospect by NHL Central Scouting.
Lovell's skating, vision and puck skills are all very good, but the biggest concern is his size -- he was just over 5-foot-5 when NHL Central Scouting measured him earlier this season. Lovell will help whatever school lands him in terms of breaking pucks up ice and on the power play.
According to sources, Boston College and Northeastern have both offered Lovell a scholarship for the 2020-21 season. Other schools have made offers, but those two are the leaders in the clubhouse. Lovell would benefit from a year of junior hockey before heading to college, but it seems likely he'll head right to school.
There will likely be significant movement on the recruiting trail ahead of and during the National Letter of Intent signing period that begins Nov. 13.
Cheremeta heading to Buckeyes
It wasn't all bad news for the Ohio State coaching staff this week. Head coach Steve Rohlik and his staff received a commitment from former Boston University left wing Mark Cheremeta.
The '99 from Parkland, Fla., left the Terriers after the 2018-19 season to head back to junior hockey. In nine games with the USHL's Dubuque Fighting Saints, Cheremeta has four goals and seven assists.
Before his freshman season at BU, Cheremeta played two seasons in the Islanders Hockey Club organization. In his final season with the Islanders, he had 20 goals and 44 assists in 57 USPHL NCDC games.
Stoever heading elsewhere
Des Moines Buccaneers goaltender Christian Stoever will play college hockey somewhere other than Merrimack. The '00 from Northville, Mich., was scheduled to play for the Warriors this season, but left North Andover after a brief stint at the school's summer session.
Stoever was recently named the USHL Goaltender of the Week. So far this season, he has a .913 save percentage in six games for Des Moines. He spent the 2018-19 season with Youngstown Phantoms and Cedar Rapids RoughRiders in the USHL.
