WESTON, Mass. — Boston College commit Timmy Delay had a goal and two assists to lead St. Sebastian’s to a 5-2 win over Rivers on Wednesday night at MacDowell Ice Arena.
Linemate Brendan Gorman had a goal and an assist while Michael Callow, Connor Joyce and Cameron Collins also scored for the Arrows. Ziv Deener-Chodirker and Stephen Canavan were the goal scorers for the Red Wings.
Close to a dozen NHL scouts were in attendance to watch Rivers center Philip Tresca, who was held off the score sheet.
Tresca’s draft status
It was not a good night for Tresca, a Yale commit, who couldn’t muster much in the way of offense in his first regular season viewing of the campaign. He had just two shots on goal, but did whistle another shot off the post in the third period. He stayed mostly on the perimeter, was soft on pucks, and shied away from contact.
Tresca, from Newton, Mass., has improved a great deal over the past year, but his ceiling is as a college player in ECAC Hockey. There’s nothing wrong with that, but he’s not a draft pick.
First impressions
It was my first look at both squads in 2019-20 and it shook out about how I figured. From what I saw Wednesday, neither team can compete for a championship this season.
St. Sebastian’s has two strong offensive lines that should be able to produce in the ISL. There are four Division I players in the Arrows' top six. The third line skates well and competes hard.
It was a little surprising to see St. Seb’s head coach Sean McCann only give his fourth line one shift as two solid ‘03s, Michael Cataldo and Jayden Grier, have upside and should be given more of a chance to play.
For Rivers, the second line was the only line that really got anything going. The first line, centered by Tresca, was held scoreless. It should be noted that the line's left wing, Michael McEachern, left the game after the first period with an upper body injury.
The team’s lack of depth and lack of speed will cost them wins down the road. The defense has three seniors who are veterans of prep hockey, but it’s an area of weakness, it would appear from this game.

Tim Delay

Delay’s physical tools are elite. He’s one of the best skaters in this age group across the entire country. His speed caused problems for Rivers’ defense. He was able to get to loose pucks and feed teammates as he did on the team’s first goal. His goal came by getting to another loose puck at the right wing circle and firing home a wrist shot with the goalie out of position. I’d still like to see him play more between the dots, be heavier on pucks, and show the ability to slow things down. Overall, a good game for Delay who showed he’s going to be able to increase his production in his second varsity season.
Brendan Gorman
St. Sebastian’s, 2/17/03, RW, right shot, 5-9/134
Gorman drove the net and quickly deposited a shot for a goal to get Seb’s on the board after the team had fallen behind 2-0. He made a couple of nice plays and showed the skating ability to get himself some time and space. He’s another player who looks poised to take a step in his second prep season.
Ziv Deener-Chodirker
Rivers, 1/2/03, C, right shot, 5-10/160
Deener-Chodirker was the best forward by far for Rivers. He’s a good skater with some speed. His goal was a snipe from the left wing circle that went bar down. His speed down the wing drew a penalty. He plays an honest game and engages in the defensive end.
Michael Callow
St. Sebastian’s, 1/15/04, LW, right shot, 6-1.5/169
Callow played his off wing today and got in on the scoring by banging home a centering feed on a rush late in the game. He’s tall, has length and skill. He’s young, and if he puts it all together, he has the potential to be a legit prospect.
Mel Mortarelli
Rivers, 1/7/04, LW, right shot, 6-2/170
Mortarelli has good size and did a good job protecting pucks, as he showed cycling the puck down low before Deener-Chodirker’s goal. His foot speed
Jacob Lavoie
St. Sebastian’s, 11/4/02, LW, left shot, 5-9/145
Lavoie had an assist on the game-winning goal. He won a puck battle below the goal line and got it out to Cameron Collins for the tally that gave Seb’s a 3-2 lead. In addition, he had a couple of nice hits and plays with an edge. He keeps his feet moving and is exactly what a prep team needs out of its third liner.
