Amherst, N.Y. – The hockey scouting world’s attention will soon turn toward the USA Hockey Select 15 Player Development Camp, as the top 2003-born Americans converge on the Northtown Center in Amherst, N.Y., from July 15-20.
Select 15s is an important showcase year, because it’s the first time the entire age group will be in front of college coaches, junior scouts and NHLPA agents.
Further, the ‘03s are entering a period when they're selected for USA Hockey’s National Team Development Program. It’s also their draft year for the USHL, QMJHL and OHL drafts.
USA Hockey Select 15s are intriguing, as far fewer kids are committed than at Select 16s and Select 17s, both also held at the Northtown Center. And there's no dearth of talent from New England and beyond.
Headliners include forwards Tyler Boucher, Jack Hughes and Ryan St. Louis, all committed to Hockey East programs. In addition, defenseman Patrick Morrissey is one of the most-coveted young prospects in the region.
Boucher is from New Jersey, but heading to play prep hockey at Avon Old Farms. Committed to Boston University, he’s a power forward who can dominate games below the dot. He drives the net and has a lethal shot. He’s the son of Brian Boucher, a Mount St. Charles product who played in the NHL and now is a broadcaster on NBC Sports Network.
Hughes is the younger brother of New York Rangers draft pick Riley Hughes and the son of NHLPA agent Kent Hughes. He’s committed to Northeastern and possesses elite skating and a well-rounded offensive skill set.
St. Louis is diminutive in stature, but he plays in the greasy areas. A Northeastern recruit, he’s extremely skilled and has a high hockey IQ.
Morrissey is a two-way, mobile, puck-moving defender who has shined at the prep level with Roxbury Latin and at various showcases across New England. He’s transferring to Dexter in the fall to play for Dan Donato’s powerhouse program.
Other top uncommitted prospects from New England who will be in Amherst include forwards Paul Davey (Greenwich, Conn.), Tim Delay (Hingham, Mass.) and J.P. Turner (Falmouth, Mass.).
