Despite it being the off-season, news hasn’t been all that slow on the recruiting and prospect front in the New England region.
Earlier this week, Jay O’Brien reaffirmed his commitment to playing the 2019-20 season in the BCHL with the Penticton Vees.
O’Brien, the former Thayer star from Hingham, Mass., spent his freshman season at Providence, but scored just two goals and three assists in an injury riddled season. He opted to leave the Friar program at the conclusion of the season.
A first-round pick of the Philadelphia Flyers in the 2018 NHL Draft, O’Brien declared his intention to transfer to Boston University earlier this summer. Per NCAA transfer rules, he has to sit out the 2019-20 season.

As first reported by Mark Divver, former St. Sebastian’s star Jayden Struble will enroll at Northeastern a year earlier than planned, if all goes according to plan this summer. The Cumberland, R.I., native is spending the summer taking classes in order to graduate from high school and matriculate to Northeastern for the 2019-20 season.
The defenseman was was taken in the second round, 46th overall, by the Montreal Canadiens in June’s NHL Draft in Vancouver. Struble had 10 goals and 30 assists in 28 games for the Arrows at the prep school level this past winter.
UMass recently picked up a commitment from a player with a familiar last name to Minutemen fans. ’01 left-shot center Taylor Makar of the Brooks Bandits committed to Greg Carvel’s program for the 2020-21 or 2021-22 season.
Taylor is the younger brother of 2019 Hobey Baker Award winner Cale Makar who starred at UMass before joining the Colorado Avalanche following the team’s Frozen Four run. Taylor had four goals and 13 assists in 43 games this past winter, his first full season with the AJHL organization.
Boston University just added an older recruit, possibly for the 2019-20 season. ’99 center Wilmer Skoog of Sweden committed to the Terriers earlier this month. In his first season in North America, Skoog registered 20 goals and 31 assists in 64 games with the NAHL’s Minot Minotauros.
