Salisbury senior right wing Matthew DeBoer committed to play college hockey at Holy Cross, he announced Tuesday on Twitter.
DeBoer, from Madison, N.J., is entering his third season of prep school hockey for Andrew Will's team. In addition to playing for the Crimson Knights, he is playing fall hockey for Rochester Selects 18-U.
DeBoer's game has improved considerably over the past couple of years, in large part due to his skating and footwork becoming much better. The '02 is heavy on pucks, goes to the dirty areas, and can be used in all situations. He's had a solid fall while playing on a top six with Merrimack commit and 2020 NHL draft prospect Alex Jefferies and Vermont commit Lucas Mercuri.
Looking forward to the college level, DeBoer projects as a middle six winger who can kill penalties and chip in offensively from time to time.
"Matt is a very smart forward who has had a lot of success this fall by moving his feet and creating plays for his linemates. I would say the biggest improvement is moving his feet continuously throughout games and generating offense off of rushes," said Rochester Selects 18-U coach Kyle Quick, who played college hockey at Brown.
He will join Salisbury alums Anthony Vincent and Nick Hale on David Berard's Crusaders. DeBoer's father, Peter DeBoer, is the head coach of the San Jose Sharks while his older brother, Jack DeBoer, is a sophomore forward at Boston University.
Big scouting weekend
While there is rarely a shortage of games to go to in the New England region, this upcoming weekend will present scouts and college coaches with plenty of opportunities to watch future players.
The Beantown Fall Classic runs Thursday through Sunday at the New England Sports Center in Marlboro, Mass. In addition to many of the usual suspects from around the region, this year's edition of the Beantown Fall Classic will have some top notch teams from outside of the region. Headlining the group of top teams from outside of the region are Honeybaked 15s, Compuware 15s, Compuware 16-U, Oakland Jr. Grizzlies 15s, Chicago Mission 15s, Chicago Mission 16-U, Rothesay Netherwood, Northwood, Bishop's College, Phoenix Jr. Coyotes, and South Florida Hockey Academy 16-U.
The Beast Series Playoffs will take place Saturday and Sunday at Rodman Arena in Walpole, Mass., and New England Sports Village in Attleboro, Mass. Most of the top teams will be at Rodman Arena while the 14-U action will be at Mount Saint Charles' Addelard Arena in Woonsocket, R.I.
