The ’02 left-shot defenseman from Hingham, Mass., will join the Eagles next fall for the 2020-21 season, according to sources. Lovell played for the Boston Advantage 18-U this fall, impressing scouts at several showcases along the way.
Lovell, whose father, Tim Lovell, was his midget coach, has started practicing with the Chicago Steel and will play at least a few games in the USHL the rest of the season.
Lovell had originally committed to Ohio State, but word of his de-commitment began to circulate over the last month. He had interest from several other Hockey East schools, but elected to go with the Eagles.
In Monday’s most recent release of NHL Central Scouting’s Players to Watch List, Lovell remained a ‘C’ prospect, meaning its scouts view him as a candidate to be drafted in the last three rounds of the 2020 NHL Draft.
Calvarino commits to Vermont
Joe Calvarino has verbally committed to play college hockey at the University of Vermont. The ’03 from Brooklyn, N.Y., plays for Westchester Express 16-U.
Calvarino is a left-shot defenseman who has 13 goals and 16 assists in 27 games while captaining the 2019-20 Westchester Express. He previously played for the P.A.L. Islanders youth organization.
Mullahy honored by USHL
Dexter Southfield alum Derek Mullahy was named the USHL Goaltender of the Week, the league announced on Tuesday.
Mullahy, hailing from Scituate, Mass., gave up just three goals and posted a .946 save percentage while leading the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders to two wins over Fargo Force and Waterloo Black Hawks.
Mullahy, a Harvard commit, played two seasons at Dexter following a two-year stint with Shattuck St. Mary’s in Faribault, Minn. He’s the second Dexter alum on Cedar Rapids to win a USHL weekly award, joining UMass Lowell commit Ben Meehan (Walpole, Mass.), who previously earned USHL Defenseman of the Week honors.
