It wasn’t solely a hockey decision when Darien, Conn., native Ryan Wilson chose to commit to play college hockey at Army West Point.
In his first season of junior hockey with the Springfield Junior Blues in the North American Hockey League, Wilson decided the entire package was the reason to become a Black Knight.
“I chose Army for a few reasons. One being that it’s a great organization with a great coaching staff, which has to do with them doing well this year so far,” Wilson told the New England Hockey Journal. “Also, after you graduate, whether you get to play pro or not, the connections and opportunities are endless.”
Wilson, who has a .904 save percentage and a 6-6-0-1 record in 15 NAHL games this season, began to truly garner junior hockey and college hockey interest last season while with Chadd Cassidy’s program at Northwood School.
His .961 save percentage during USPHL 18-U games was the best in the circuit and he was able to show off his game at a couple of marque events, including the Berkshire Jamboree and the St. Sebastian’s Christmas Tournament. A ’00, Wilson could play another season of junior hockey after this one, but is expected to matriculate to Army starting next fall.
Army, under Brian Riley in his 15th season as head coach, has a 6-3-0 record this season. The Black Knights started the season with two non-conference wins over Union and UConn.
The team is led by a couple of former prep stars: junior goaltender Trevin Kozlowski, who played at Gunnery, and senior wing Dominic Franco, who skated at Kimball Union.
Brown lands commit from Meirowitz
North Jersey Avalanche 16-U defenseman Harry Meirowitz verbally committed to Brown University, it was announced Monday.
The right-shot ’03 is a mobile, puck-moving defenseman. From Old Westbury, N.Y., Meirowitz played previously for the P.A.L. Islanders. In 85 games with P.A.L. last season, he registered 12 goals and 41 assists for 53 points.
Thanks to current assistant coach Jason Guerriero and former assistant James Marcou, now at Harvard, the Bears have developed a nice connection with Long Island kids. Brendan Whittet’s program also has commitments from Kimball Union defenseman Nicholas Bernardo and P.A.L. Islanders goaltender Jacob Zacharewicz. All three hail from Long Island and played or are currently playing for P.A.L. Islanders.
