Boston College and Providence received verbal commitments this week from two of the top uncommitted '03 hockey players in the region.
On Thursday, Boston College received a commitment from Cushing junior center Billy Norcross, who represented the United States at the Five Nations Tournament that was held earlier this month.
Norcross, who hails from Lynn, Mass., had two goals and three assists over five games at July's USA Hockey Select 16 Player Development Camp. New England Hockey Journal ranked him as the 14th best forward at the camp.
Norcross is a solid 200-foot player who is heavy on pucks, plays well along the wall and below the dots, and can be counted on in all situations. He has good size and will likely be a versatile piece throughout the lineup for BC.
Friars add big goal scorer
Earlier in the week, Buffalo Jr. Sabres 16U forward Connor Pelc committed to Providence College. The Buffalo, N.Y., native had four assists at the USA Hockey Select 16 Player Development Camp.
He caught the attention of Providence head coach Nate Leaman and associate head coach Ron Rolston at the Junior Chowder Cup while playing for Matt Dibble's Roc City Elite, a top summer hockey organization.
Pelc uses his size and strength to his advantage. He does a good job protecting pucks with his length and he can unleash a hard wrist shot. He scored eight goals over the course of the weekend at the Junior Chowder Cup.
"Connor has always had the tools but in the last year, he decided to dedicate himself to hockey. He’s an unbelievable person. I couldn’t be happier for him," said Dibble.
Kimball Union loses player to QMJHL
Forward James Malatesta, who was slated to play for Tim Whitehead's Kimball Union program this upcoming season, instead bolted for the QMJHL, it was announced earlier this week.
Malatesta signed with the Quebec Remparts, forgoing his collegiate eligibility. The Kirkland, Quebec, native would have been an elite offensive player for the Wildcats had he stuck around for the prep school season.
