He amassed more than 1,200 points in his 18-year NHL career, none of which was spent in a Bruins sweater, but the current Arizona resident and engaging NBC Sports analyst is a New England icon, thanks largely to his prep championship days at Thayer Academy alongside Tony Amonte.
After his youth hockey days in Ridgefield., Conn. — where a young Roenick once had memorable fan interaction with the Hartford Whalers’ Gordie Howe — he matured in his days on Boston’s South Shore in Marshfield and now owns the Pembroke Country Club.
"He’s as passionate a hockey fan as there is and he loves talking about the game," said Billy Jaffe, who spearheaded a popular hockey podcast with Roenick in recent seasons. "He speaks his mind. You might not always agree with him, but he’s not afraid to express his opinion. He’s a real believer in growing the game. He loves being around fans of hockey, around kids who love the game."
On Nov. 10, 2007, Roenick became the third American-born player (joining Joe Mullen and Mike Modano) to score 500 goals. He finished with 513 goals and one of the most impressive résumés in U.S. hockey history.
