University of New Hampshire first-year head coach Mike Souza has hired Jeff Giuliano as an assistant coach.
Giuliano’s hiring has been rumored for a few days, but was first reported by Jamie Staton of WMUR, the ABC affiliate in Manchester, N.H. and confirmed to New England Hockey Journal by two college hockey sources.
Giuliano is a Nashua, N.H., native who has spent the past three seasons as an assistant coach with the Manchester Monarchs in the ECHL. It was Giuliano’s first foray into coaching after a 13-year professional career that spanned North America and Europe.
A St. Paul’s School alum, Giuliano went onto a successful college career at Boston College. He played for Jerry York’s Eagles from 1998-2002, serving as captain his senior season. During his time at BC, the team advanced to three Frozen Fours, winning the NCAA Championship in 2001.
Giuliano played in 101 NHL games with the Los Angeles Kings, while also playing for their minor league affiliates in Manchester and Reading, Pa. He spent the last seven years of his playing career in Europe.
During Giuliano’s first two seasons at BC, he would have played against Souza’s Wildcats, as their NCAA careers overlapped.
Souza took over for longtime UNH head coach Dick Umile following the conclusion of the 2017-18 season. A Wakefield, Mass., native, Souza played at UNH from 1996-2000.
Giuliano joins associate head coach Glenn Stewart and volunteer goaltending coach Brian Foster on Souza’s staff in Durham.
