Merrimack College announced Monday it had hired Scott Borek to be the new head coach of the school's hockey program. He comes to North Andover after a three-year stint as the associate head coach under Nate Leaman at Providence College.
"I am honored to lead the Merrimack College men's ice hockey program," Borek said in a release put out by the school.
Prior to his time in Providence, Borek was an associate head coach at New Hampshire for Dick Umile from 2002-2015. The Swampscott, Mass., native also had previously served as an assistant coach at Dartmouth, Providence, Brown and Lake Superior. Borek also has previous head coaching experience at Division III Colby College and at Lake Superior where he took over for Jeff Jackson in 1996.
The three reported finalists were Borek, Northeastern associate head coach Jerry Keefe and Harvard associate head coach Paul Pearl. According to multiple sources, Keefe removed himself from consideration prior to meeting with the Merrimack team which was part of the interview process. Borek and Pearl both met with the team last week. Both Keefe and Pearl would make great head coaches at the Division I level, if given the opportunity.
Borek, a 1985 Dartmouth alum, will be the eighth head coach in the history of the program. He played two seasons for the Big Green before an injury derailed his playing career. He played high school hockey at nearby St. John's Prep in Danvers, Mass.
