Several players with ties to the New England region were selected by USA Hockey to play in the 2020 Youth Olympic Games, it was announced Wednesday.
The 17-player roster will compete in the 2020 Winter Youth Olympic Games from Jan. 9-22 in Lausanne, Switzerland. Former Boston College assistant coach Scott Paluch will serve as the team's head coach after guiding the 2016 entry to the Gold Medal.
Boston University sophomore center Jake Wise (North Andover, Mass.) led the U.S. in scoring during the 2016 Winter Youth Olympic Games. In six games, he posted six goals and four assists. Wise played for Central Catholic before making the jump to USA Hockey's NTDP.
Other local players on the 2016 team included Oliver Wahlstrom (Yarmouth, Maine), who is now playing with the New York Islanders, and Northeastern freshman wing TJ Walsh (Shrewsbury, Mass.).
The team is made up entire of players born 2004, which happens to be the birth year of the 2020 USHL Draft, QMJHL Draft, and OHL Priority Selection.
South Kent Selects Academy 15 Only goaltender Arthur Smith is the only New England native to make the roster. The 6-foot-3 goaltender hailing from Farmington, Conn., has been impressive in numerous viewings over the past year. Smith's team won the New England District 15 Only Championship on Nov. 10.
The other goaltender is also a player with ties to the region. Originally from Calabasas, Calif., Dylan Silverstein now resides in Woburn, Mass., and plays prep hockey for Dexter Southfield. He was consistently stellar all fall playing for the Neponset Valley River Rats 16-U in the Beast Series. The River Rats recently won the Massachusetts State 16-U Championship.
One of Smith's teammates with South Kent Selects Academy, defenseman Vinny Borgesi, will be alongside him wearing the red, white and blue. A small, puck-moving defenseman with jam, Borges is committed to Northeastern University.
The final player selected with ties to the region is Boston University recruit Lane Hutson, an offensive-minded, puck-moving defenseman with the North Jersey Avalanche 16-U.
