Boston College associate head coach Greg Brown is leaving the Eagles to join David Quinn’s staff with the New York Rangers, according to multiple sources.
Brown, a 1990 BC grad, has been on Jerry York’s staff since the 2004-05 season. In addition, the Southborough, Mass., native has been an assistant coach for USA Hockey at the World Junior Championship three separate times, including the last two years.
Brown was a decorated player in his own right, starring at BC for three seasons and playing for the U.S. at the 1988 Olympic Games. An offensive defenseman, Brown posted 24 goals and 96 assists for 120 points in 119 career games with the Eagles.
A second-round pick of the Buffalo Sabres in the 1986 NHL Draft, Brown played 100 NHL games. A St. Mark’s School alum, he concluded his pro career in Europe in 2003.
Brown has earned a reputation as one of the best defensive coaches in all of hockey. Even rival coaches have spoken highly of his X’s and O's knowledge, plus how he relates to players and provide tips on how to better play the blue line.
While Brown was at BC, the Eagles won the NCAA Championship in 2008, 2010 and 2012. He has helped develop a long line of NHL defensemen, including Noah Hanifin (Boston, Mass.), Brian Dumoulin (Biddeford, Maine), Steve Santini and Ian McCoshen.
His void at BC will be felt both on the blue line and in the recruiting department. While Mike Ayers (Hingham, Mass.) is a more-than-capable recruiter, the Eagles will no longer have the selling point of Brown coaching the team’s defensemen.
Some possible candidates to replace Brown:
- Former Merrimack coach and BC alum Mark Dennehy (Dorchester, Mass.), who's now with the ECHL's Wheeling Nailers.
- BC alum and current UConn assistant Brendan Buckley (Needham, Mass.).
- Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins (AHL) assistant coach J.D. Forrest, who played at BC from 2000-2004.
Other names that could be thrown in the mix are former Bowling Green coach Scott Paluch, who was an assistant at BC during the beginning of the York Era, and BC alum Ben Eaves, who is on the staff at Miami.
