Four Hockey East commits have been invited to the Canada West Selection Camp Roster ahead of the 2019 World Junior A Challenge.
The 2019 World Junior A Challenge takes place Dec. 7-15 in Dawson Creek, British Columbia. In addition to Canada West, the other four teams competing are the United States, Canada East, Czech Republic and Russia.
Boston College commits Jack Agnew and Peter Reynolds, Northeastern recruit Stanley Cooley and Providence commit Nicholas Poisson are the four players with ties to Hockey East schools.
Agnew is an ’01 right-shooting defenseman playing for the Chilliwack Chiefs in the BCHL. In 21 games this season, he has two goals and seven assists. The Oakville, Ontario, native was a two-year standout at St. Andrew’s College, a prep school in Aurora, Ontario.
Reynolds is the most highly regarded of the four players. The Fredericton, New Brunswick, native played three seasons at Shattuck St. Mary’s before embarking on his junior hockey career in August. Also playing for Chilliwack in the BCHL, Reynolds has six goals and 10 assists in 20 games. Reynolds, an ’03, will likely be picked in the first two rounds of the 2021 NHL Draft.
Cooley is in his second season with the Spruce Grove Saints in the Alberta Junior Hockey League. Hailing from Ottawa, Ontario, the ’02 has five goals and 13 assists in 25 games this season. He’s already just one point shy of matching his point total from his rooking campaign in the AJHL.
Poisson, from Vancouver, British Columbia, helped the Prince George Spruce Kings to a BCHL Championship in 2018-19, his first season of junior hockey. The ’01 has seen his production skyrocket this season. He has nine goals and 18 assists in 26 games, just two points away from equaling last season’s total.
Another familiar name on the roster to those in New England hockey circles is Kyle Penney, a former standout at Kimball Union who is committed to Cornell. The Cole Harbor, Nova Scotia, native has nine goals and nine assists in 25 games for Chilliwack in the BCHL.
An assistant coach for Canada West is Merrimack alum Clayton Jardine, who played for the Warriors from 2011-15. He’s in his first season as head coach of the AJHL’s Camrose Kodiaks. Prior stops as a coach include the Kindersley Klippers in the SJHL and as an assistant at Division III New England College.
