Our first Top 10 of November looks similar to the last, but this weekend’s results in Hockey East and ECAC play called for some shifting.
Providence remains the region’s top team after shutting out Holy Cross in a non-conference game Saturday, while UMass is on the rise after Quinnipiac's first loss of the season.
On Commonwealth Avenue, it was, for the first time in 2018-19, a winning Saturday night for both Boston College and Boston University. The Terriers took three out of four points from Northeastern in a Hockey East rivalry series and jumped up the Top 10, while their archrivals defeated Merrimack to salvage a weekend split.
Elsewhere, the bottom four teams in the Top 10 split their weekend sets in conference play.
Top 10 teams
1. Providence
Record: 5-1-1 (2-0 Hockey East) | Last week: 1
Hayden Hawkey pitched his second consecutive shutout and third in six games, making 27 saves en route to a 3-0 win at Holy Cross. Local defensemen Spenser Young (Brentwood, N.H.) and Ben Mirageas (Newburyport, Mass.) accounted for the first two Friar goals before Brandon Duhaime sealed the win with an empty-netter. Mirageas, Duhaime and Josh Wilkins all had two points apiece.
2. Massachusetts
Record: 6-1 (3-0 Hockey East) | Last week: 3
The Minutemen lead Hockey East and are off to their best start since 2009 following Saturday’s 5-1 win at New Hampshire. Five different UMass players scored goals, while four had multiple-point games. Sophomores John Leonard (Amherst, Mass.) and Mitchell Chaffee each recorded a goal and two assists to push their season point totals to 11. Their classmate, Cale Makar, now has a Hockey East-leading 13 points.
3. Quinnipiac
Record: 6-1 (1-1 ECAC Hockey) | Last week: 2
After scoring three second-period goals in a 5-3 win Friday at Harvard, the Bobcats had their six-game win streak snapped with a 5-1 loss at Dartmouth. Junior defenseman Brogan Rafferty had three of his four assists on the weekend against the Crimson, while senior Chase Priskie lit the lamp on both nights to run his scoring streak to five straight games. Sophomore Keith Petruzzelli (Wilbraham, Mass.) had a season-high 34 saves at Harvard.
4. Boston University
Record: 1-4-1 (1-2-1 Hockey East) | Last week: 5
Dante Fabbro scored twice and fellow third-year defenseman Chad Krys had three assists in Saturday’s 4-1 win over Northeastern, which was Albie O’Connell’s first as BU’s head coach. Fabbro and Krys each finished the weekend with four points, as they recorded two assists and one goal, respectively, in a 5-5 tie Thursday vs. the Huskies. Jake Oettinger stopped 64 of 68 shots in the series.
5. Northeastern
Record: 4-3-1 (1-1-1 Hockey East) | Last week: 4
The Huskies had a chance for four straight road wins, but BU took the weekend series with Saturday’s 4-1 victory at Agganis Arena. Senior Patrick Schule and junior Grant Jozefek each scored twice in Thursday’s 5-5 draw, while junior Matt Filipe (Lynnfield, Mass.) netted his first goal of the season in the finale.
6. Boston College
Record: 1-5 (1-1 Hockey East) | Last week: 6
Like their archrivals, the Eagles earned their first win of the season on Saturday. David Cotton factored into all four goals, while linemates Julius Mattila and Logan Hutsko each had two points as BC coasted to a 4-1 win over Merrimack. The Warriors squeaked out a 2-1 result in North Andover a night earlier. Hutsko had BC’s lone goal in the loss. Joseph Woll had a strong weekend in net, saving 59 of the 62 shots he faced.
7. Yale
Record: 2-1 (2-1 ECAC Hockey) | Last week: 7
The Bulldogs split a pair of 4-2 contests on the road, losing at Cornell and defeating Colgate on the strength of Bruins draftee Curtis Hall’s first two collegiate goals and senior Joe Snively’s three assists. Snively leads the Elis with three goals and seven points after a two-point game against the Big Red. Kevin O’Neil had a goal against the Raiders and three assists on the weekend. Yale split the goaltending duties, with senior Sam Tucker (Wilton, Conn.) earning the 27-save victory.
8. Connecticut
Record: 4-3-1 (2-2-1 Hockey East) | Last week: 10
Adam Huska pitched a 39-save shutout and senior Karl El-Mir scored the lone goal en route to a series-opening, 1-0 win at Vermont. The Huskies lost their chance at a sweep on Saturday, as Vermont scored with 13 seconds left in regulation and one second left in overtime to take a 2-1 win. El-Mir assisted on Alexander Payusov’s lone goal in the series finale, while Jachym Kondelik had helpers on both goals on the weekend.
9. Dartmouth
Record: 2-1 (2-1 ECAC Hockey) | Last week: 8
The Big Green won for the second straight Saturday behind junior netminder Adrian Clark and handed Quinnipiac its first blemish of the season, 5-1. Head coach Bob Gaudet’s 400th career victory erased the memory of a weekend-opening, 7-1 loss to Princeton. The ECAC swing continues this weekend with tilts vs. Brown and Yale.
10. Maine
Record: 3-4-1 (1-2-1 Hockey East) | Last week: Not ranked
The Black Bears split a pair of one-goal games with UMass Lowell at Alfond Arena, earning their first Hockey East win of the season in the series opener, 4-3. Chase Pearson scored twice in the victory and now leads his team with five goals, while Tim Doherty (Portsmouth, R.I.) had a two-point night that included the game-winning goal. Sophomore goaltender Jeremy Swayman made 71 stops in the series, including 44 in Saturday’s 1-0 loss.

Dante Fabbro

Fabbro led the Terriers to a 1-0-1 weekend against Northeastern, scoring two goals in Saturday’s 4-1 win after recording two assists in Thursday’s 5-5 tie. The Nashville Predators prospect had an all-around weekend via a plus-3 rating, eight shots on goal and six blocked shots.
