Monday’s announcement that Western Michigan assistant coach Todd Krygier was leaving the Broncos to become an assistant coach with the Grand Rapids Griffins, the AHL affiliate of the Detroit Red Wings, could have a far-reaching impact across college hockey.
New St. Lawrence head coach Brent Brekke has rounded out his coaching staff, taking two assistants from Atlantic Hockey schools.
As New England Hockey Journal first reported last week, assistant coach Tommy Hill is leaving Holy Cross to take the same position at St. Lawrence. Also joining him on Brekke’s staff will be longtime Bentley assistant and Maine alum Ben Murphy.
While Holy Cross moved quickly to replace Hill with Notre Dame volunteer assistant Max Mobley, Bentley head coach Ryan Soderquist will begin fielding applications and gauging interest from potential candidates this week.
Boston University is set to tab former RPI assistant coach Dan Jewell as the program’s new Director of Hockey Operations, according to multiple sources. Jewell will replace Brittany Miller, who resigned following the conclusion of the Terriers’ season.
Merrimack is making a strong push to hire Union associate head coach Jason Tapp. Second year head coach Scott Borek is looking to fill the void left by Curtis Carr, who moved on to become an assistant coach at Bowling Green.
Clarkson head coach Casey Jones will have in-person, on-campus interviews this week with American International assistant coach Mike Towns and Sacred Heart assistant coach Paul Kirkland. The Golden Knights have been looking for a second assistant since Brekke left for rival SLU.
RPI’s assistant position, left vacant after head coach Dave Smith parted ways with Jewell, could be filled soon. Curry head coach T.J. Manastersky and Canisius assistant coach Scott Moser are considered the leading candidates.
Colgate is also in need of an assistant coach after Mike Harder left the program earlier this off-season. Head coach Don Vaughan is entering the final year of his contract and is reportedly considering a couple of alums. The two most logical candidates are Dan Wildfong, the head coach and GM of the NAHL’s Lone Star Brahmas, and Joey Mormina, a recently retired AHL veteran who has spent the past two seasons as an assistant with the AHL’s Hartford Wolfpack.
