Harvard junior center Ryan Donato has signed an NHL entry level contract with the Boston Bruins, forgoing his final season of collegiate eligibility. The Scituate, Mass., native was drafted in the second round of the 2014 NHL Entry Draft.
The 2017-18 ECAC Hockey Player of the Year and Hobey Baker Award Finalist recorded 26 goals and 17 assists in 29 games played this season for the Crimson. He finishes his college career with 60 goals and 44 assists in 97 games. Donato also starred for Team USA at February's Olympic Winter Games. The Dexter School alum had five goals and an assist in five games.
Donato, who will transition to wing once a pro, is a terrific shooter with an overall good skill set. His skating isn't a detriment, but it isn't as positive of a quality as his puck skills and shooting ability. He played for his father, Ted Donato, at Harvard. The elder Donato played in 854 NHL games, including eight seasons with the Bruins.
