Former Thayer Academy star center Jay O'Brien will play for Boston University, starting with the 2020-21 season. The Hingham, Mass., native and 2018 first round pick of the Philadelphia Flyers will play the 2019-20 season with the Penticton Vees in the BCHL.
O'Brien left Providence College following an injury-riddled season that also saw him suspended for off-ice issues as well as not fitting into the Friars' system. He had just two goals and three assists in 25 games for Nate Leaman's team.
O'Brien put up gaudy numbers for Thayer before being selected by the Flyers with the 19th overall pick in the 2018 draft. Things didn't work out for O'Brien with the Friars, but a fresh start at Boston University could be just what the doctor ordered. He'll likely gain some confidence following a season as an overage player in the BCHL.
Yale lands defenseman from BCHL
In other recruiting news, Yale picked up a commitment from '00 right-shot defenseman Cody Schiavon, who was just named captain of the BCHL's Surrey Eagles for the upcoming season.
The West Kelowna, British Columbia, native was obviously scouted during the BCHL season, but made an impression on some college coaches when he played for BMG at the Battle of Boston last month. In 44 BCHL games during the 2018-19 season, Schiavon tallied three goals and 18 assists.
More known for his defense, Schiavon is a strong-skating, tough, two-way defenseman with a high compete. A very smart student, he's expected to matriculate to Yale for the 2020-21 season after his third full season of junior hockey.
Black Bears lose USHL recruit
Maine lost a quality recruit this week when Max Sasson announced he had de-committed and switches his loyalties to Western Michigan. Sasson hails from Birmingham, Mich. A left-shot forward, Sasson scored eight goals and added nine assists in 62 regular season games for the USHL's Cedar Rapids RoughRiders. However, he turned it up a notch in the playoffs, tallying two goals and three assists in six games.
