The Boston Junior Bruins Shootout is set for this coming Friday through Monday at the New England Sports Center in Marlboro, Mass.
The event, hosted by the Boston Junior Bruins, features 18U and 16U tournaments, plus junior games within the USPHL NCDC. All 12 teams from the USPHL NCDC will play over the course of the weekend and into Monday.
The 18U and 16U divisions will play Friday and Saturday, then crown a champion on Sunday afternoon. College coaches and area scouts will get a chance to see some teams that haven’t been around the Boston area yet this season.
Teams to watch at the 18U Division are the Boston Jr. Eagles, Mid Fairfield Rangers, Selects Academy at South Kent, Little Bruins, GBL Bruins, Cape Cod Whalers, Nichols School Prep, Northwood School, Junior Bruins and Skipjacks.
The availability of 2019 NHL Draft prospects John Farinacci, Jayden Struble, Braden Doyle and Cade Webber is not yet known. All four players will compete in the USA Hockey All-American Prospects Game Wednesday night at the XCel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minn. Rest and timing could factor in here.
The team with the most high-end talent in Marlboro will be Selects Academy 15U, competing in the 16U Division. The team, coached by Jon Hutcheon, has three elite prospects in forwards Cam MacDonald and Ryan Greene, plus defenseman Oscar Plandowski, a Quinnipiac commit. All three are 2003-born prospects from the Maritimes in Canada.
There are several good American players on the team, including goaltender Alexander Mickanin of Hopkinton, Mass., and forward Jack Kurrle of Middlesex, Vt. The team’s captain, Copeland Fricker, is property of the Spokane Chiefs in the WHL.
In the 16U Division, Selects Academy 16U, loaded with NCAA commits, is one of the top teams to watch. Other groups to keep an eye on are the Cape Cod Whalers, Mid Fairfield Rangers, Boston Jr. Eagles, Skipjacks, Junior Bruins, Newbridge Academy, South Florida Hockey Academy, Islanders Hockey Club, and Hill Academy.
