The Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) held its annual draft on Saturday, June 2, 2018. Several New England players and a few Canadian prospects committed to local colleges were selected.
Tom Barbati was the first prospect scooped up from the region. The St. John’s Prep defenseman and Tewksbury, Mass., resident went in the sixth round, 105th overall, to the Acadie Bathurst Titan, the 2018 QMJHL and Memorial Cup champion.
The Halifax Mooseheads took a pair of Connecticut natives in the eighth round. Quinnipiac commit Victor Czerneckianair of Southington, Conn was picked out of Selects Academy 15U and Yale recruit Jason Marsella of Greenwich, Conn. was selected a few picks later out of North Jersey Avalanche 15U.
With the 164th overall pick in the 10th round the Quebec Remparts selected Thayer forward Sasha Teleguine, a Northeastern commit from North Attleboro, Mass. One pick later, the Saint John Sea Dogs selected goaltender Connor Bradford of Kingston, Mass. and the Boston Advantage 15U.
In the 12th round, Saint John picked another American, Mansfield, Mass., resident Riley Bezeau, who plays for the South Shore Kings 16U.
Blainville-Boisbriand selected New Canaan, Conn., resident Ryan McGuire, a two-way center out of Belmont Hill, in the 12th round. He’s the son of NBC Sports analyst Pierre Mcguire.
Quebec Remparts took the best ’02 in New England, Hingham, Mass., native Matt Beniers, with the 227th pick in the 13th round. The former Milton Academy center will play for USA Hockey’s NTDP before having his pick of any of the top schools in the Boston area.
Going in the 14th and final round was Boston Advantage 15U defenseman Stephen Davis, a Boston College commit from Hingham, Mass.
Leading the way among New England prep players not from the region who were selected was Selects Academy star Josh Lawrence. The Boston University commit went in the first round, 15th overall, to the Saint John Sea Dogs.
The Saint John Sea Dogs picked northeastern recruit Charlie Desroches, a star defenseman for Selects Academy, 32nd overall in the 2nd round.
The Quebec Remparts took Providence commit Nic Savoie, a smooth-skating defenseman out of Newbridge Academy.
Kimball Union forward Paul Dorewas selected by Sherbrooke with the 189th pick in the 11th round.
Halifax took Selects Academy right wing Ethan Phillips, a Quinnipiac commit, with the 232nd pick in the 13th round.
