We're still two months out from the 2018-19 college hockey season commencing, but New England-based programs are nonetheless making moves on the recruiting trail and coaching front.
Boston University has received a commitment from U.S. National Team Development Program U18 star Dom Fensore, one of the top 2001-born defensemen in the country. From Thornwood, N.Y., Fensore was originally committed to Quinnipiac.
Fensore is the first major recruiting victory for the Terriers since Albie O'Connell became head coach and Paul Pearl crossed the river from Harvard to become the former's associate head coach. Those coaching changes were prompted by Cranston, R.I., native David Quinn leaving Comm. Ave. to become head coach of the NHL's New York Rangers.
Fensore is an elite puck-moving defender. His ability to sidestep forecheckers and escape trouble is uncanny. He likes to jump into the attack and has the vision necessary to compliment his terrific skating skills.
Tortorella hired as Harvard assistant
Harvard head coach Ted Donato has hired Jim Tortorella to become the men's hockey team's new assistant coach, the school announced Thursday.
Tortorella had been rumored as the replacement to Paul Pearl for a few weeks. Pearl left Harvard earlier this month to join Albie O'Connell's staff at BU.
Tortorella was hired as Merrimack's Director of Hockey Operations earlier this offseason after serving as the head coach at Saint Anselm College last winter. A goaltender at the University of Maine from 1977-1981, he had previous Division 1 coaching experience as an assistant at Providence and New Hampshire. Tortorella was also the head coach at Colby College of Division 3 from 1999 through 2011.
UMass Lowell, Holy Cross still searching
Norm Bazin and Dave Berard are both still looking to fill vacant assistant positions on their respective staffs at UMass Lowell and Holy Cross.
Bazin was left looking for an assistant to replace Cam Ellsworth who took the top job at Division 3 powerhouse program Norwich University. Boston University alum and Union assistant Jason Tapp, Colgate assistant Juliano Pagliero, and Maine alum and Bentley assistant Ben Murphy are the top candidates, according to Mark Divver of the Providence Journal,.
Holy Cross's opening is due to Brock Sheahan leaving the program to become the assistant of the USHL's Chicago Steel.
