Dubuque Fighting Saints right wing Ryan St. Louis was the only New England resident named to the 2022 U.S. Junior Select Team that will compete in the World Junior ‘A’ Challenge set for next month in Cornwall, Ontario.
St. Louis, from Greenwich, Conn., is in his first season playing for Dubuque.
Through 11 USHL games, he has five goals and 11 assists for 16 points. St. Louis, who played prep school hockey at Brunswick and grew up skating for Mid Fairfield, appeared in 38 games with Northeastern during the 2021-22 NCAA season.
He scored a goal and had an assist with the Huskies. Prior to playing for Northeastern, he spent two seasons with USA Hockey’s NTDP.
St. Louis is the son of Montreal Canadiens coach Martin St. Louis, who played college hockey at Vermont before enjoying a Hockey Hall of Fame-worthy career in the NHL, mostly with the Tampa Bay Lightning and New York Rangers. Ryan’s brother, Lucas, is an '05 defenseman also on Dubuque.
While St. Louis was the only New Englander to make the 21-man roster, there were five other players with ties to the region who were selected for the U.S. Junior Select Team. Most prominent among them is one of the goaltenders, former South Kent standout Jacob Fowler, who recently de-committed from Clarkson. Currently with the Youngstown Phantoms, he’s projected as one of the top five North American goaltenders for the 2023 NHL draft.
Right wing Tanner Adams, a Providence College commit who spent one season at Mount Saint Charles before heading to the Tri-City Storm, is another player with plenty of connections to the New England region. Two Muskegon Lumberjacks, defenseman Gavin McCarthy (Boston University) and forward Jake Richard (Connecticut), and Omaha Lancers left wing Alex Bump (Vermont) are all committed to Hockey East schools.
The 2022 World Junior ‘A’ Challenge is set for December 11-18 at the Cornwall Civic Center, home of the CCHL’s Cornwall Colts.
The U.S. team is historically made up of players from the country’s only Tier 1 league, the USHL. Winners of five of the last eight tournaments, the U.S. will play Canada West, Sweden, Canada East and Latvia in the preliminary round.
