Good reads

  • The NHL canceled all games through Dec. 14 on Friday. NHLPA executive director Donald Fehr says the players need a “willing negotiating partner” if a deal’s ever going to be reached.

  • The Globe and Mail’s James Mirtle offers us a much-need tutorial: Decertification for Dummies.

  • The Examiner’s Emma Harger has an update on the B’s overseas, including Tyler Seguin’s third hat trick in Switzerland.

Quick hits

  • The Springfield Falcons coughed up a 4-1 lead last night and fell by a score of 5-4 in overtime against Portland. Oliver Ekman-Larsson buried the game-winner for the Pirates.

  • Jeff Malcolm stopped 32-of-33 for Yale in a surprising 2-1 road victory over Denver last night. Denver came into the game with a 9-1-0 overall record. The Elis got goals from Kenny Agostino and Stu Wilson.

History lesson

  • How’s this for a wacky one: On this day 11 years ago, the Bruins managed to lose to Toronto after allowing just 12 shots on goal. Two of those shots obviously had to have been unstoppable, as Byron Dafoe finished the night with 10 saves and got the loss. Curtis Joseph had a 29-save shutout. Former-now-but-future-then Bruin Travis Green and Jonas Hoglund tallied for Toronto.

Entirely off-topic

  • Actor Larry Hagman died on Friday at the age of 81. The man had a pretty damn commendable career, highlighted by starring in all 356 episodes of the hit TV show Dallas.
