Thanks to a pair of scintillating performances on the road in Philadelphia, Jr. Rangers forward Matt Swett earned Offensive Player of the Week honors for the Atlantic Junior Hockey League.
The Groveland, Mass., native did it all in a 3-2 win over the Little Flyers on Sept. 29, playing a role in all three tallies with two goals – including the game-winner – and an assist.
One night later, with Boston taking on the Jr. Flyers, Swett came through in the clutch with what proved to be the game-tying goal with 21 seconds left in regulation.
Through five games, the 6-foot-1 forward ranks second in the league with six goals and is tied for sixth with eight points through five games.
Swett wasn’t the only New Englander honored for his recent efforts.
Plymouth, Mass., native Gene Lane was named the league’s Goaltender of the Week. He led the Connecticut Wolfpack to a two-game sweep over the Laconia Leafs, stopping 42 of 44 shots.
With the pair of victories, Lane improved to 3-1 on the season. He owns a 1.24 goals-against average, which ranks second in the AJHL.
Northern Cyclones blueliner Grant Gallo, a San Diego native, was named Defensive Player of the Week after picking up three assists in two tilts.
