NEWS & NOTES

* Carl Soderberg participated in morning skate but isn't ready for game action just yet.

* Former Bruins defenseman Matt Hunwick is expected to be a healthy scratch tonight. The 28-year-old blueliner has yet to appear in a game for the Avs this season.

* The Avalanche improved to 3-0 on the year on Tuesday with a 2-1 win over the Maple Leafs in Toronto.

OBSCURE STATS

Milan Lucic (3 pts last 2GP)

David Krejci (2 pts last 2 GP)

Jarome Iginla (0 pts last 2 GP)

Loui Eriksson (0 pts last 2 GP)

* Patrice Bergeron has eight points in seven career games against the Avs.

* Colorado is one of just four teams Zdeno Chara has never scored a goal against.

P.A. Parenteau (3 pts last 2 GP)

Jamie McGinn (4 pts in last 3 GP)

Gabriel Landeskog (0 pts in last 2 GP)

* Alex Tanguay has 15 points in 19 career games against the Bruins.

* This will be Cory Sarich's 33rd career game against Boston. The last time he faced the Bruins came as a member of the Flames in a 9-0 loss at TD Garden on Jan. 5, 2012.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR

* Quite the interesting time for Avs coach Patrick Roy to give Semyon Varlamov the night off. Varlamov was rolling and even fared well on the road (where he went 1-14-2 last year) the other night. Jean-Sebastien Giguere will make his first start of the season tonight. The 36-year-old goaltender is 2-2-1 (3.19 GAA) lifetime against Boston. Giguere went 5-4-4 in 18 appearances last season for the Avalanche.

* It's still extremely early in the season, but it'd be good to see one of Jarome Iginla or Loui Eriksson break through tonight. Eriksson was better in Boston's second game of the year against Detroit with four shots on goal. He has six points in his last seven games against Colorado. Iginla tallied twice in his last game against Varlamov and the Avs on Feb. 28.

* Will either team's PK crack tonight? Boston and Colorado have been perfect on the penalty kill thus far. We saw Boston's power play come through with two goals on the man advantage on Saturday against the Wings. Thanks to their wealth of young talent up front, the Avalanche boast two pretty daunting PP units, with O'Reilly-Duchene-Downie on one and Landeskog-Stastny-Parenteau on the other.
