Good reads

  • Time’s Gary Belsky writes that a wealth distribution problem is what’s really behind the NHL lockout.

  • Whatever the problem may be, fans across the globe have become completely disinterested in the day-to-day non-developments of the lockout – even in hockey-mad Canada, as is shown in poll results published by the Montreal Gazette.

  • When asked about the state of negotiations, Ron Hainsey (Bolton, Conn.) told the Associated Press that “we’re kinds of in a situation where no one wants to make the first move.” Good job, good effort, everyone.

Quick hits

  • There will be a battle of division leaders in Portland tonight. The host Pirates sit in first place in the Atlantic Division with 32 points, thanks largely to Alex Bolduc’s 26 points on the year. Cam Atkinson leads the visiting Falcons with 29 points through 25 games, as Springfield comes into this one with an eight-point edge on second-place Bridgeport in the Northeast.

  •  Bruins president Cam Neely, GM Peter Chiarelli, coach Claude Julien and former team captains Ray Bourque and John “Chief” Bucyk are delivering an estimated $22,500 worth of toys to hospitals throughout Boston today.

History lesson

  • On this day in 2006, the Bruins came into Ottawa and lit the Senators up like a Christmas tree. Marco Sturm had a hat trick, Marc Savard tallied twice and had a pair of assists, and Patrice Bergeron set up five goals in a 7-2 victory. Ray Emery stopped just 15-of-20 on the night, was chased after two periods and took the loss.

Today on NEHJ

  • Kimball Union is celebrating its first Flood-Marr tournament championship in 21 years. Mike Zhe has the story in this week’s Prep Journal.

Entirely off-topic

  • Suri Cruise, daughter of divorcees Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise, will be getting a $24,000 playhouse for Christmas. It has running water and electricity. Why am I sharing this? Because it’s mind-blowing and I want you to buy me one.
