Good reads

Hurricanes fans can breathe a sigh of relief. Captain Eric Staal won't need surgery after being the victim of a devastating hit by Alex Edler during the IIHF World Championship.

Former NHL referee Kerry Fraser says in his latest blog for TSN that refs should be able to use their own discretion when determining whether a puck shot over the glass deserves a delay-of-game penalty.

ESPN’s Katie Strang checks in with former Ranger Wade Redden, a late-season pickup for the Bruins who’s now trying to knock his old teammates out of the playoffs.

Atlantic Hockey will need to replace UConn to remain at 12 members once the Huskies jump to Hockey East at the end of 2013-14. Chris Lerch debates whether Rhode Island or St. Anselm are worthy candidates.

Quick hits

Dennis Seidenberg and Wade Redden both skated during Saturday's Bruins practice at TD Garden. The latter could be a game-time decision on Sunday for Game 2 against New York.

BU associate head coach Mike Bavis (Roslindale, Mass.) announced his resignation, according to reports. Bavis joined Jack Parker's staff in 1998 but the program did not hire him as the legendary bench boss's replacement, instead bringing David Quinn (Cranston, R.I.) back into the fold.

History lesson

Happy 29th birthday to former Bruins goalie Hannu Toivonen. The Finnish netminder, who was traded for Carl Soderberg back in 2007 after a promising start to his NHL career went down the tubes, split the 2012-13 season between the ECHL and the SM-liiga.

Whenever you're feeling really sad, try watching this dubbing of Zdeno Chara at the All-Star Draft last year and not laughing until you suddenly feel like life is actually worth living again. Cracks me up every time.
