Good reads

  • Johnny Gaudreau had two goals and an assist this morning, leading the U.S. to a 9-3 win over Slovakia to advance to the quarterfinals at the World Juniors.

  • Here comes the NHLPA’s bound-to-be-insulting counteroffer that’ll make us all think the 2012-13 season ain’t happening. Forgive my lack of optimism, ladies and gents.

  • ECAC Hockey will be partnering up with Fox College Sports for its championship semifinals and final in March.

Quick hits

  • Vermont defeated Princeton 6-3 last night to improve to 6-8-4 on the season. The Catamounts are 3-0-1 in their last four games.

  • Umass-Lowell played its first game since the holiday break yesterday, topping Bentley by a score of 3-2. Doug Carr was back between the pipes and stopped 22-of-24 for the River Hawks, who have now won three straight to improve to 7-7-1 overall.

History lesson

  • On this day last year, the Bruins played like rubbish in a 4-2 loss down in Dallas. Tim Thomas allowed all four goals on 27 shots. Michael Ryder tallied for the Stars. The B’s were 11-2-0 in their previous 13 games coming into the New Year’s Eve clash.

Entirely off-topic

  • It’s Black Monday for the NFL, which has seen five of its coaches fired this morning (and possibly more by the time you read this). Surprisingly, the two knuckleheads below still have jobs.
