Good reads

  • Former B’s bench boss Robbie Ftorek has been relieved of his head coaching duties by the OHL’s Erie Otters, who were off to a 7-15-5 start after a woeful 10-52-0-6 season last year.

  • The Globe and Mail’s Bruce Downbiggin writes that “if the NHL scored a hat trick last time, it’s in the process of scoring an own goal in this lockout.”

  • Yahoo! Sports’ Nicholas J. Cotsonika believes a face-to-face meeting between owners and players – one void of leadership from each party – is a risk the NHLPA has to take.

  • ESPN’s Scott Burnside salutes Abbotsford Heat goalie Barry Brust’s record-breaking, 268-minute shutout streak and the journey he’s been on since being drafted by Minnesota back in 2002.

Quick hits

  • The P-Bruins and Whale will meet for just the second time this season tonight. Connecticut walloped Providence by a score of 6-3 in their first clash, with goals coming from six different skaters.

  • BC will visit BU in the first of back-to-back games between the Eagles and Terriers. On Nov. 11, Kevin Hayes led Boston College to a 4-2 victory with a goal and an assist in the first matchup between these longtime rivals.

History lesson

  • On this day seven years ago, the Boston Bruins completed the infamous swap that sent Joe Thornton to San Jose in exchange for Wayne Primeau, Brad Stuart and Marco Sturm. While the trade kick-started an eventual fire-sale and a new era in B’s history – one that paved the way for the arrival of a new GM in Peter Chiarelli and key free agent signings in Zdeno Chara and Marc Savard – the deal was still a freakin’ doozy and, Stanley Cup or not, should always be considered one of the worst trades in the history of the universe.

Today on NEHJ

  • As per usual, our Friday offerings include Dan Guttenplan’s latest ECAC Journal, Andy Merritt’s Hockey East Journal -- which hails BC sophomore Johnny Gaudreau – and this week’s college hockey power rankings.

Entirely off-topic

  • Remember that creepy story about the guy from Sons of Anarchy killing his elderly landlady and her cat? Apparently he wasn't on drugs. Didn't see that one coming.
