Chara, Alfredsson named All-Star captains
Zdeno Chara has had the ‘C’ stitched on his sweater since arriving in Boston in 2006, but the 6-foot-9 defenseman will be serving as captain of a different squad on Jan. 29.
Chara has been selected as one of the two team captains for this year’s All-Star Game up in Ottawa. Former teammate Daniel Alfredsson of the hometown Senators will captain the opposing squad.
“It’s going to be interesting,” said Chara. “It’s another honor on top of being selected to the All-Star (game). I found out this morning so I’m kind of a little bit surprised, but at the same time excited.”
Chara will also serve as the GM of his team, as the Slovakian rearguard will hand-pick which All-Star players he wants to join him during the fantasy draft on Jan. 26.
“I don’t think I’m going to do too much research, but obviously you have to put some thoughts into it,” Chara said. “I’m going to try to do my best to select the best possible team that I can.”
Last year, former Bruin Phil Kessel wound up being Mr. Irrelevant, as the Leafs’ high-scoring winger was the last player picked. Will Chara throw him a bone and make sure Kessel doesn’t suffer the same fate?
“I don’t know. We’ll see how it goes,” Chara said. “Obviously somebody is going to be last. I don’t know what they have for him this year, whether it’s a car or something else, but we’ll see how it goes.”
