WILMINGTON – After a tumultuous start to the 2011-12 season, the defending champs are still approaching their turnaround one step at a time.
Saturday night was certainly a huge sign that the Black and Gold are making progress, as the Bruins thrashed the Leafs by a score of 7-0 in Toronto, earning victories in back-to-back games for the first time this year.
“Yeah I thought we played pretty well and obviously we were on top of our game,” Zdeno Chara said following Sunday’s practice at Ristuccia Arena. “We took it very seriously and we knew what we were playing for. We were really happy with the way we capitalized on the scoring chances we had.”
Shy of their previous win, a 5-3 victory over the Senators, goals had been extremely tough to come by for Boston. Asked what the key to their success was on Saturday, Chara said strictly focusing on their own game-plan paid huge dividends.
“We were initiating and trying to focus on what we wanted to do and not on what they wanted to do,” the Bruins captain said. “That’s the most important thing for us right now: to focus on our game and make sure we do the thing we’re supposed to do.”
But don’t get confused and think the B’s believe they’re out of the woods just yet. Despite two strong wins in a row to improve to 5-7, there’s still plenty of work ahead.
“I think we’re still in the process,” said Chara. “It’s just a first step in the other direction. Certainly we’re not satisfied. We know we dug ourselves a hole early on and we need to get out of it.”
The Bruins will look to push their winning streak to three games on Monday night when they welcome the visiting Islanders to TD Garden.
“They’re a very dangerous steam,” Chara said of New York. “They’re similar to Toronto with speedy, skilled forwards. They’re playing really well and they beat some really good teams. They showed last year that they play with a lot of energy and high-tempo. We have to get ready for them.”
