BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. — Salem State is the preseason pick to win the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference men’s hockey championship, by a vote of the league’s coaches that was released Wednesday.
The MASCAC is comprised of seven institutions that sponsor the sport, including affiliate members UMass-Dartmouth and Plymouth State. In 2011-12, the MASCAC will be eligible to receive an automatic berth into the NCAA Division 3 tournament.
Salem State captured six first-place votes to amass 48 points in taking the top spot in the poll, as the defending league tournament champion Vikings outdistanced second-place and defending regular-season champion Fitchburg State’s total of 42 points that included the other first-place vote.
Plymouth State was next in third place with 32 points, while Westfield State and UMass-Dartmouth followed in fourth and fifth place with 28 and 24 points, respectively.
Worcester State was sixth with 14 points, while Framingham State finished in seventh place in the poll with eight points.
